A shout out to our Wild Cats as they take down Spruce Creek 42-14 in the second round of the 8A state playoffs Friday night!
WINTER PARK – An opportunistic defense and plenty of Tyrone Davis enabled the Winter Park Wildcats to roar into the second round of the Class 8A state playoffs on Friday night.
Davis ran for 54 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 57 yards and another score, and Winter Park’s defense forced three turnovers en route to a 42-14 blowout of Spruce Creek in a first-round game. Unbeaten Winter Park (11-0), ranked No. 6 in the state, will host Apopka in a second-round game on Nov. 17. Apopka defeated Seminole in a first-round contest.
Winter Park led just 21-14 at halftime behind two TD runs and a TD catch from Davis. Spruce Creek’s Kyle Minckler passed for 181 yards and two TDs to keep things interesting.
The Wildcats then seized the momentum on Spruce Creek’s opening play of the second half when JJ Valle-Smith returned a fumble 46 yards for a TD. Winter Park then scored on consecutive drives overlapping the third and fourth quarters to take a commanding 42-14 lead.
“I think we played pretty good,” said Winter Park coach Tim Shifflet. “All year long, we’ve been a second half team. We had some blown coverages in the first half.”
Winter Park’s Cameron Legree passed for 185 yards and two TDs. The Wildcats allowed only 231 total yards, including just 34 in the second half.
Minckler finished with 191 yards passing for the Hawks (8-2).
Neither team took more than a seven-point lead in the first half, but Winter Park never trailed. Davis ran for TDs of 8 and 1 yard, and caught an 8-yard TD pass in the opening half. But Spruce Creek kept things close behind Minckler’s two scores.
