As our year is wrapping up, I found that I really wanted to introduce students to the Dove Self-Esteem Project. So, I decided to make this extra credit for those that are interested. The project for our classroom is divided up into 5 lessons (10 extra credit points per lesson/module, for up to 50 extra credit points), covering Appearance Ideals, Media Messages, Confront Comparisons, Banish Body Talk, and Be The Change. I think it is important for all of us--young or old, male or female--to really address these issues that impact us all.
I invite you at home to join in the challenge and conversation!
How aware are you of the marketing and advertising you are exposed to everyday? How many of those advertisements are health related products--weight loss, muscle gain, vitamins, pharmaceuticals, gym equipment, beauty and personal care products, etc.? How about the sales gimmicks used? Celebrity endorsements, BOGO, Statistics (4 out of 5 doctors recommend...), Act now and receive..., Fast results!, No effort!, Before and After Photos, Testimonials, etc.
Short of building a 4:00 am informmerical, students are going to create their own "Quackery" commercial using gimmicks and inventing a product to get a better understanding of these tactics.
This project is meant to be fun! I have decided this project may be done as a small group, or individually. Students will receive up to 50 points for the project outline--Due Friday, 4/20, and up to 50 points for the final video submission--due to our group boards by next Monday, April 23rd. Here is the grading rubric that will be used for the commercial itself:
Monday, January 8th--Return to School
Monday, January 15th--No School
Wednesday, January 31st--Refuse to Use Project Due
(Updated: due Friday February 2nd)
