About our class.
What is H.O.P.E.?
H.O.P.E. (Health Opportunities through Physical Education) is the high school course (graduation requirement) that integrates physical education and health. The purpose of this course is to develop and enhance healthy behaviors that influence lifestyle choices and student health and fitness. Students realize the full benefit of this course because it is taught with an integrated approach.
In addition to the physical education content represented in the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, specific health education topics within this course include, but are not limited to:
Components of Physical Fitness
Nutrition and Wellness Planning
Diseases and Disorders
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Prevention
Human Sexuality including Abstinence and HIV
Physical education plays a critical role in educating the whole student with Psychomotor, Cognitive and Affective benefits. Physical activity is like "miracle grow for the brain" states John Ratey. It doesn't make the student learn, but it gives the student an advantage to learn. The student also learns how to live an active and healthy lifestyle, recognize and model responsible behaviors and develop or enhance life values.
